The Fluke 8846A/C benchtop digital multimeter (also known as a multitester) is a true RMS, auto-ranging meter for measuring current, voltage, resistance, frequency, period, capacitance, and temperature in manufacturing and electrical testing and repair applications. The meter comes with a set of detachable test leads. The dual display shows two readings at once, such as voltage and resistance. The meter measures 2- and 4-wire resistance, and it has split-terminal jacks for measuring 4-wire resistance using only two leads (2 x 4 test leads sold separately), for improved accuracy. An audible continuity sensor confirms a circuit conducts electricity, and a diode test detects proper functioning of a circuit’s diodes. The meter can take temperature measurements using a resistance temperature detector (RTD, sold separately). The meter’s internal memory can store measurement and configuration data, and a USB port on the front of the meter accepts a flash memory drive of up to 2 gigabytes (GB) for increased data storage. The meter provides statistical information such as minimum, maximum, average reading, and standard deviation in numerical and graphical form for tracking measurement trends and sudden changes in readings. The user can set high and low limits for pass/fail testing. The meter can also express AC and DC voltage in decibels (dB), the power ratio of decibels to milliwatts (dBm), and percent of the reading relative to a preset reference value. The math mode manipulates readings according to the formula mx + b, where m and b are user-entered constants for scale factor and offset, respectively, and x is the actual reading as would be normally displayed. The relative mode stores a reading in memory to use as a zero point for subsequent readings so that multiple readings can be compared. The user has a choice of slow, medium, or fast measurement rate; the faster the rate, the less accurate the measurements. IEEE 488, RS-232, and Ethernet ports on the meter provide connection to a computer for data transfer and analysis and for remote operation (RS-232-to-USB cable, RS-232-to-USB cable adapter, and Fluke Forms software are included). Triggers can be set to respond to measurement, bus, front panel, and external inputs. A standby feature turns off the display and ensures the meter will not respond to front-panel, external, or remote command inputs. The meter has a removable handle that can be used to carry or prop up the meter during use. A certificate indicating compliance with International Standards Organization (ISO) and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) 17025 requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories is included.
This true RMS (root mean square) meter provides accurate readings when measuring linear loads, such as standard induction motors and incandescent lights, where the current or voltage has an undistorted waveform, or nonlinear loads, such as electronic devices or motors, where the current or voltage has a distorted waveform. When turned on, the meter is in auto-ranging mode and automatically selects the correct operating range for the property being measured. It can be switched to manual-ranging mode, which allows the operator to choose the appropriate operating range. The display has a 2,000,000-count resolution, meaning it can display up to 1,999,999 units (6-1/2 digits) before the operating range needs to be changed. It meets IEC safety standard 61010 and is certified for Category I installations up to 1,000V (which covers protected electrical equipment such as small household appliances) and Category II installations up to 600V (which covers large household appliances and devices connected to a fixed power supply, such as refrigerators and air conditioners).

Multitesters (also called multimeters) are electrical test meters that measure multiple properties of an electrical circuit, such as current, voltage, resistance, capacitance, and continuity. Available in handheld or benchtop models, multitesters diagnose electrical problems in electrical equipment, wiring, and power supplies. A variety of probes, clamps, and leads can be used to connect the meter to a circuit or device. Multitesters display information either in analog or digital form. Factors that influence meter choice include the electrical properties to be measured, the anticipated range of results, and the desired level of protection against transient voltages. Safety ratings are based on the International Electrotechnical Commission’s (IEC) standards for low-voltage test equipment. IEC 61010 delineates four overvoltage installation categories. In general, a meter with a category IV rating will provide more protection against transient voltages than a meter with a lower category rating.
Fluke Corporation manufactures electrical testing tools and software for industrial and commercial applications. The company, founded in 1948, is headquartered in Everett, WA.
